Hurricane Hone weakens as it slowly moves away from the state.

At 5pm, the center of Hurricane Hone was located near latitude 19.1 North, longitude 158.6 West. It is about 175 miles west of Kailua-Kona and about 160 miles SSW of Honolulu.

Hone's forward speed has increased slightly and is now moving toward the west near 13 mph. This motion is expected to continue for the next few days. On the forecast track, Hone will pass well south of Oahu and Kauai through Monday morning.

While Hone is moving away from the state, rain bands, including heavy showers continue to move in around the hurricane. Stronger showers have been impacting Hawaii Island and Maui Co. and that will be the case Sunday evening as well.

Hone is forecast to weaken to a tropical storm by Monday morning, and gradually weaken after that.

UPDATE 2 P.M.

The Tropical Storm Warning for Hawaii County is now discontinued.

The center of Hurricane Hone was located near 18.9N and 157.9W. Hone is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 mph and its motion is expected to continue for the next few days.

On the forecast track, Hone will pass well south of the smaller Hawaiian islands through Monday morning.

Hone is expected to pass well north of Johnston Island around midweek.

Maximum sustained winds are near 80 mph with higher gusts. Some gradual weakening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Hone is expected to become a tropical storm by tomorrow.

Hurricane-force winds are expected to extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds will extend outward up to 90 miles.

Rainfall: Hone will deliver persistent and locally widespread rainfall to portions of the Hawaiian islands through tonight.

Surf: Swells generated by Hone will affect portions of the Hawaiian islands, producing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions today.

UPDATE 1:30 P.M.

Hurricane Hone produces heavy rainfall and flash flooding on the Big Island.

Outer rain bands from Hurricane Hone impacted portions of the Big Island, resulting in heavy rainfall and flash flooding. The main flooding impacts were road closures that occurred late Saturday night and into Sunday morning over the Puna and Kau Districts.

The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also reported a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Tonga at approximately 1:29 p.m. Based on all available data destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

UPDATE 11 A.M.

Hurricane Hone lifts away from the Big Island as rains and winds begin to affect neighboring islands. Expect a wet and windy afternoon. Power outages have already started in many spots. More power outages are expected as strong winds could knock down trees and power lines.

At 1100 AM HST, the center of Hurricane Hone was located near latitude 18.8 North, longitude 157.3 West. Hone is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph and this motion is expected to continue for the next few days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 80 mph with higher gusts. Some gradual weakening is forecast during the next couple of days.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 991 mb (29.27 inches).

WIND: Tropical Storm conditions will continue on the Big Island into the early afternoon, with gradually diminishing wind and rainfall through the evening. Winds will strongest downslope of higher terrain, over headlands, and through passes.

RAINFALL: Hone is expected to produce an additional 3 to 5 inches of rainfall over mainly windward and southeast facing slopes of the Big Island. Additional rainfall of 1 to 3 inches will be possible over the smaller islands, mainly windward.

SURF: Swells generated by Hone are affecting portions of the Hawaiian islands, producing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Hurricane Gilma will slowly weaken as it moves west and will fall apart before reaching the islands. The remnants will likely increase rain chances Friday - Saturday.

UPDATE 5 a.m.

Hurricane Hone continues to lash the Big Island with flooding rains and strong gusting winds.

Hone's winds affecting the island are over 50 to 60 mph. So far, the strongest winds have stayed offshore with 80 mph winds detected roughly 25 miles south of the South Point. Flash Flood Warnings remain in effect for the Big Island along with Flood Watches.

Rains are also impacting windward Maui with less severe impacts. For Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai, there have been scattered, passing showers. Rains will increase later this afternoon and evening, however the bulk of the moisture should stay toward the South.

Hone is moving toward the West near 8 mph and this motion is expected to continue through the middle of the week.

Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph with higher gusts. Little change in strength is expected through the morning hours today, before a gradual weakening trend begins this afternoon onward. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles.

High rainfall and surf continue to be the observed impacts of Hone. Rainfall to reach a total of 6 to 12 inches. Dangerous conditions with life-threatening surf and rip currents are expected.

UPDATE 2 a.m.

Hurricane Hone has strengthened slightly as it slowly moves west, to the south of Hawaii Island.

At 2 a.m., the center of Hone was located near 18.1 North, longitude 155.7 West, about 115 miles to the south-southwest of Hilo. It is moving to the west at 10 mph, and it is expected to remain at this speed through Monday.

Heavy rain bands continue to move into parts of the Big Island. More downpours and thunderstorms are expected throughout Saturday night. Because of those heavy showers, parts of Hawaii Island are under a Flash Flood Warning.

Hurricane Hone has already sent more than six inches of rain in several spots of the Big Island and is expected to produce storm total rainfall of six to 12 inches over mainly windward and southeast facing slopes, with locally higher amounts possible.

Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches will be possible over other islands, mainly for windward areas.

Hone currently has maximum sustained winds of 80 mph with higher gusts. Hone is currently forecast to remain a hurricane until late Sunday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles. At 8 pm, the center of Tropical Storm Hone was located near 18.1 North, longitude 154.8 West, about 100 miles to the south of Hilo.

Rain bands continue to move on shore with some moderate and heavy rainfall reaching parts of the Big Island. Heavier rain and thunderstorms are expected over the next few hours and throughout Saturday night.

Hone is moving toward the west near 15 mph and this motion is expected to continue for the next several days, gradually slowing after the weekend.

Maximum sustained winds increased slightly to 70 mph with higher gusts. Hone is currently forecast to remain near hurricane strength at its peak Sunday through Monday.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center released an update for Tropical Storm Hone and reported that Hone is 125 miles southeast of Hilo with sustained winds of 65 MPH moving west at 14 MPH.

High surf, high winds and flooding rains is also being reported across Hawaii Island.

The National Weather Service Flood Watch for Hawaii Island and High Surf Warning for east-facing shores remain in effect.

Waipio Valley Access Road is closed due to the storm. Kohala Mountain Road, Highway 250, is also closed due to a down tree at the 17 mile marker. All east-facing County Beach Parks are closed as well.
